Working on the Sarah Flint production team means having a love for travel and pizza is a must! Our Production Managers Olivia and Ellie, as well as our Founder and Designer Sarah, work closely with our Italian factories and fly to Italy almost every month to meet and discuss new designs and check on production. Here is a peek into what a day in their Italian life looks like.
Wake up call! We quickly get dressed in our favorite Sarah Flint shoes (usually a Natalie flat, Grear sandal or Perfect Pump 85), then head downstairs to fuel up on cappuccinos and chocolate croissants in the beautiful courtyard of our hotel.
We head over to one of our factories in Vigevano, where we meet with the owners, discuss new development and plan the next season’s production run. This is always so exciting and one of our favorite meetings, no wonder it’s first!
Before we head out, we take a walk through the factory to check out the shoes on the production line. We check every detail from our signature three lines on the back of each shoe to the placement of the foam cushioning in the sock lining.
Our generous factory owners take us out to lunch at their favorite local spot. During lunch, we discuss all things production-related and we also like to catch them up on what is going on in NYC at our headquarters! We love having a close and personal relationship with the owners in Italy and have come to view them as friends, and even family, over the years. We often joke it is their goal to outdo themselves each time with the amount of food and wine they can get us to consume.
What is an Italian lunch without a post-meal espresso and biscotti? Pro Tip: never order a cappuccino after 11 am, the Italians will immediately know you're an American.
We head back to the office in the center of Vigevano to review all the new prototypes for the next season. We like to send pictures back to our team so they can also see what is coming and get as excited as we are!
We are often seeing the first round of prototypes, which means it's the factories first attempt at capturing Sarah's design vision. Typically, there are a few corrections that need to be made to make it perfect, so Sarah covers the shoe in masking tape to easily draw out her edits. She happens to be sample size which means she is able to try everything on and be sure the fit is correct. After a few more rounds of prototypes and when Sarah is happy with the look and feel of the shoe, we go on to test new designs in other sizes on different types of feet, like a foot with low arch, high arch, a wide foot and narrow foot.
Now it is finally time to catch up with the NYC team. We have aperitivo drinks (white wine all around) and a charcuterie platter to share to help us get through the very last few of our emails! The bar next to our office knows us well at this point.
We head into the town square for dinner, where the entire staff knows each of us and our orders! Ellie and Sarah always order pizza, Olivia gets the branzino fillet and Mattia always says he is “on a diet” and will order a salad, but then inevitably orders pasta.
Almost time for bed, but not before we head over to the award-winning gelato place across the street for an after-dinner treat-- our favorites are the kiwi, fresh lemon, and pistachio!
